Salem, MA, known for its history of the 1692 Witch trials which lasted until May 1963 - is lesser known today for its booming fishing production and the nature surrounding the main part of the town. Salem, a place I visit almost every summer is almost like stepping into a time machine and going as far back as the end of the 17th century. The history and the tension can still be felt in the air and yet there is also a solemnity to the town that overcomes all of which it is known for today.
That solemnity lies in the heart of the new Wiccans, Witches, and native generations of families still keeping the heart of a beautiful picturesque New England town alive.
Salem Woods is just down the road from Salem Square and the main part of the city-like town. Legend and I ventured, there last year during an Autumn Day when we were traveling through Massachusetts to take some amazing Fall shots for you to enjoy!
Taking in the morning, we decided that if we were going to go to Salem, as FA nature photographers we were going to see what else Salem had to offer besides the vibrant esoteric and occult culture.
Going into Salem Woods, there is a map beforehand just like any trail head, letting you know the routes in which you can take to get to the highest point overlooking the town itself. Yet, there was also something different about this place.
Even on a beautiful day, walking into this woodland area was rather dark and felt alive with the madness of centuries ago. I don’t know why it felt that way, but nature has a funny way of communicating what it wants you to know and the secrets it holds.
When we reached the top of the forest, the rocky peak below our feet, we took this landscape photograph that you see before you. The beauty of that day began with a whim of going somewhere off the beaten path of a well-known city and reaching the mountaintop that keeps this vibrant small town atmosphere alive - especially during the Season of Witches!
