Swan Song
Sometimes miracles just happen. When going for my morning walk with Legend, I finally discovered why he wanted to keep going to this tiny walkway near the shore. We usually drive to a park before I get started with my photography and work for the day, and when walking our usual route, I have had to steer him sometimes from going through the little walkway leading to the shoreline - not the beach, the kind of shoreline that you think might be swampy but actually leads to a beautiful outlet of the Atlantic Ocean.
With it being tick season and random boats simply placed overboard on the small shoreline and locked into place using the stump of a tree, I must confess I didn’t want Legend to have to deal with too high grass and irritating ticks or seeing possible strangers trying to canoe. Except when I took this picture, we discovered there was another way into the shoreline.
So, it's not the first time I have been to this place - I decided to take the different path hidden under some fir trees still growing little blue berries even in the cooling of the start of the Autumn season.
My favorite poet, Robert Frost, and arguably his most famous work, “The Road Not Taken,” was the path, or the road, we took that day. Discovering that there was more to the high grass and beach trees than meets the eye.
The shoreline wasn’t filled with just tall stalks of grass or filled with muddy water slamming into small rocks, nor was it filled with old boats or strangers. Rather, it was filled with the beautiful sight and aroma of yarrow and birch tree branches hanging over us until we came to the clearing and a better, albeit the best view of this part of the Atlantic I had ever seen. That is when the miracle occurred.
The swan you see in this picture is the very miracle that I forgot can occur when you decide to take the road less traveled by. That day, I remember I wasn’t feeling well and was a little down on myself for having chosen to invest in something that may take time to build. Feeling unsure and yet also having practiced simply having faith, especially when times like this occur, I realized that miracles often occur not just in a moment, but rather they are the journey.
Were it not for Legend finally getting his way and stubbornly not letting me take him to our car until we walked down that path, I would have not have discovered the Swan and the beautiful hidden treasure you find when you decide, stubbornly, not to give up. This has made all the difference.
